Your 4 Wheeled Friend…
Choosing a Walker is not as easy as it seems. You might look at the price tag, see what your friends are using or just choose whatever gets you out of the shop the quickest! And while we do need to consider price and the recommendations of friends, this Walker is going to be your companion for a long time. So here are some things to consider:
Does the Walker adjust to your size? When you try a Walker make sure it’s correctly fitted to you first. There’s no substitute for going to a specialist “mobility aids” retailer and trying a few out. Think of it like your shoes or your bra and take the time to find one that fits comfortably!
Can you operate it? Most Walkers have seats and baskets and brakes on them. But if you can’t use these functions then you paid for nothing. So if it has a seat then sit on it to see if you fit comfortably - and make sure you can get out of it. Check that your hands can work the tabs and levers and zips - especially the brake levers. Some Walkers seem to have brake levers designed for hands like gorillas!
Can you lift it? A great feature of modern Walkers is that they collapse to go with you in your car boot. But to get them in your boot you (or a loved one) needs to be able to lift it. So try a lift test. If lifting is an issue for you then don’t worry - there are some really light Walkers out there for you. Ask the shop assistant for the ones made of carbon fibre (it’s what your Ferrari is made of!).
Have your needs changed? You will grow used to your Walker over time. You’ll even come to be grateful for it. But it’s not a dog (or a husband). So if your trusty Walker no longer serves its purpose then don’t be afraid to replace it with one that does.
If all of this is baffling you then arrange to meet your Physiotherapist at your local “everyday living aids” shop and let them help you choose…
